Museums by Candlelight

Picture
South Mountain Heritage Society is pleased to share our "virtual" Museums by Candlelight in 2020 since we cannot join together in-person safely for this beloved holiday tradition.

Each year, we deck the halls of the historic Resurrection Reformed Church and welcome visitors to view our exhibits, tour the building, enjoy refreshments, and hear music played on our historic Pomplitz and Rodewald Pipe Organ.

We hope that you will enjoy this virtual experience of the SMHS museum and we invite you to join us in Burkittsville when it becomes safe to do so. In the meantime, we wish you very happy holidays and a healthy new year!

Each year, a group of wonderful volunteers decorate the museum with traditional trimmings and setup displays of historic toys and other artifacts relating to the Holidays. The gallery below contains some images of these displays and visitors during past Museums by Candlelight gatherings.

Public Health in Burkittsville

In this video, SMHS Historian and Curator Jody Brumage shares a few stories detailing the ways Burkittsville has faced public health crises, both in its past and in the present. Learn how the town rallied during the Civil War to provide medical care to wounded soldiers in field hospitals. Hear about the typhoid outbreak that led to the creation of a water system that briefly served the town.
